Neon Sign Not Lighting Up? Full Troubleshooting Guide (Step-by-Step Fixes)

Neon Sign Not Lighting Up? Full Troubleshooting Guide (Step-by-Step Fixes)

If your custom neon sign isn’t turning on, don’t worry — 99% of issues can be quickly diagnosed at home with just a few simple checks. Our neon signs are fully tested for 24 hours before shipping, so most problems happen during shipping or from simple connection errors. In this guide, we’ll walk you through exactly how to find the issue and get your sign glowing again.

First, Understand How Your Neon Sign Works

Let’s start simple — your complete neon sign kit has 3 main parts, all connected in one line:

  1. Power Supply (Adapter) – Black or white casing, with a red/green indicator light
  2. Dimmer Controller – Adjusts brightness
  3. LED Neon Sign Panel – Your custom light-up artwork
Standard Connection Order:

Power Supply → Plug into wall → Dimmer → Neon Sign

If anything breaks in this chain, your sign won’t light up. Let’s test each part one by one.

Step 1: Check the Power Supply (Most Common Issue)

The power supply is the small box (black or white casing) that powers your entire neon sign. It has a tiny red or green indicator light on the side — this is your first clue.

How to test:

  1. Plug only the power supply into a working wall outlet (do NOT connect the dimmer or neon sign yet).
  2. Look closely at the power supply: Is the indicator light ON?
  3. If the light is OFF:
    • Gently shake the power supply. Do you hear loose parts rattling, buzzing, or clicking inside?
    • This means the power supply was damaged during shipping (shaking, dropping, or pressure).

What to do next:

The power supply is defective. Contact our customer service for a free replacement — we’ll send a new one right away.

Step 2: Test the Dimmer Controller (Second Most Common Problem)

If your power supply light is bright and steady, but the neon still won’t turn on when connected to the dimmer, the dimmer is likely the problem.

How to test:

  1. Unplug everything from the wall first.
  2. Remove the dimmer completely from the line.
  3. Connect the power supply DIRECTLY to the neon sign (skip the dimmer entirely).
  4. Plug back into the wall.

What happens next:

  • If the neon sign lights up normally: The dimmer was damaged during shipping.
  • Our products pass 24-hour quality control before shipping, so dimmer issues almost always come from rough transit.

What to do next:

Reach out to our support team for a free replacement dimmer — we’ll get you a new one immediately.

Step 3: Check the Neon Sign Panel (Least Common Case)

If you’ve tested both:

  • Power supply (indicator light works)
  • Bypassed the dimmer (connected power directly to neon)

AND the sign still does NOT light up

Then the issue is with the neon sign panel itself.

What to do next:

Contact our customer service with your order number and test results. We will remake and resend a brand-new neon sign for you.

Bonus Troubleshooting: Neon Sign Is Flickering / Blinking

If your sign turns on but flickers, dims randomly, or flashes, this is almost always a voltage issue — NOT a product defect.

Why this happens:

In many areas of the United States, power is supplied by private companies, and voltage is not always a stable 110V. Weak or unstable power will cause flickering.

How to fix:

  1. Test the sign in a completely different location (home → office → garage → friend’s house).
  2. Plug it into a different wall outlet (avoid extension cords or power strips if possible).
  3. If it still flickers in multiple locations, contact our team — we will remake a sign compatible with your local voltage.

Quick Recap: 3 Steps to Fix Any Neon Sign Problem

  1. Check the power supply light → Replace if no light or rattling.
  2. Bypass the dimmer → If works, replace the dimmer.
  3. Direct power still no light → We’ll remake your neon sign.
  4. Flickering? Test in another location (voltage issue).
